Learn about architect John Porter Clark, long credited as a pioneer of Desert Modernism. Former Palm Springs Mayor William Kleindienst, the architect who recently renovated the historic Welwood Murray Memorial Library, will share behind-the-scenes pictures and stories about the building, soon to celebrate its 75th Anniversary. Lecture tickets include a commemorative gift and access to the cocktail party and house tour (held 4:00 PM-6:00 PM) showcasing a great example of Clarks work.

John Porter Clark (1905-1991) has been referred to as a midcentury modernist and credited as one of the pioneers of Desert Modernism, noted for his use of local rock, concrete block, and metal and glass. Clark had a long partnership with Albert Frey, from 1939 until 1957, at which time he started his solo practice.

The house tour and reception is at a Clark-designed home, built in 1956, on nearly one acre in Deepwell Estates. This property has a long Hollywood history as the longtime residence of William Holden and Stephanie Powers, then later the actress Tippi Hedren. The post-and-beam architecture includes tongue and groove ceilings, terrazzo floors, a stunning fireplace, and floor to ceiling glass walls. Purchased in 2011, it was restored to its current pristine condition by Rodrigo Vargas Design. Catering for the cocktail party is provided by New Leaf Catering.

Choose between lecture times at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. All lecture tickets include the home tour and cocktail reception scheduled from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Limited tickets are available for the cocktail party and home tour only.
